About Hydromet
Profile
HydroMet focuses on collecting and recycling the contaminant metals in by product waste residues from various smelter and industrial manufacturing processes.. Using Hydrometallurgical technologies developed in-house over the past 16 years, HydroMet produces value added metals and metal chemicals for on sale to agricultural, mining and industrial applications.
This technology provides an environmentally acceptable alternative to long-term storage or disposal to increasingly limited and high cost landfill options, and at the same time produces a valuable end product sold to Australian and overseas industry.
Our Mission
In February 2008, the board of HydroMet announced approval to triple our recycling capacity from 12,000 tonnes to 36,000 tonnes per annum of used lead acid batteries at its Unanderra battery recycling facility.
HydroMet now has capability to recycle up to one-third of the estimated 90,000 tonnes to 110,000 tonnes of lead acid batteries used in Australia. This enables HydroMet to make a dramatic positive impact on Australia’s environmental footprint by both recycling the battery components and producing valuable products for consumption in the lead metal, plastic and acid recycling industries.
HydroMet’s goal is to provide solutions to difficult residue handling problems with the added environmental benefit of a valuable recovery and recycling route. This means that otherwise unwanted and or unrecoverable compounds can be used and can complement the primary natural resources contribution to the increasing demand for these products.
HydroMet are constantly seeking new opportunities to examine residues/wastes with a view to finding treatment and recovery solutions through their unique technologies

Future Direction
Today, HydroMet is in a strong and stable position, deriving healthy sales revenues from a number of project streams developed over 16 years of varying significant projects with a range of blue chip clients both in and outside Australia. Based on the company’s current favourable economic conditions and future outlook, continuous growth and significant improvement in our overall income streams is anticipated.
HydroMet intends to continue to explore other avenues of business expansion either through acquisition of businesses with synergies to our own or ongoing research and development work capable of contributing to the future growth of the company.
Revenue Streams
- Historically driven by treatment fees to process residues containing hazardous contaminants for safe disposal.
- Today a balanced mix of treatment fees and sales revenue for value added products generated from a range of waste streams processed at Unanderra and Tomago eg Zinc, Precious Metals, Copper, Selenium, Tellurium and recently introduced Lead and Polypropylene products.
- Future revenues will be derived more from value adding than from fees through production of high purity Selenium and Tellurium chemicals, other Zinc products and the prospects of smelting lead product from the battery recycling project.
- Move to revenues based on premiums for metals recovered rather than discounts for intermediate products.

Capabilities
HydroMet continues to confirm its reputation as a firmly established recycling company with a worldwide client base.
HydroMet’s Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling plant continues to improve processing performance; the EAF dust and zinc sulphate production remains the only proven zinc recovery process; and the MinMet facility is now a dedicated selenium/precious metals, processing value from various feed streams for clients, globally.
An idea of the extent of HydroMet’s capabilities is as follows:
- Processed over 150,000 tonnes of industrial wastes over the past 10 years.
- Unique hazardous waste immobilisation technologies with over 30 Specific Immobilisation Approvals issued by NSW DEC.
- Zinc chemical production from steel mill EAF dusts.
- Selenium Copper and Tellurium production from smelter precious metal/selenium bearing residues from around the world.
- Lead product and recyclable plastic and acid recovered from used lead acid battery project.
- The ability to produce Zinc, Copper, Cobalt, Manganese, Selenium, Tellurium and Lead chemicals from a range of mining and industrial residues along with used lead acid batteries.
- Technical knowledge and expertise to deal with difficult hazardous industrial wastes to recover valuable components and safely dispose of process residues.
- Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage approved importer of specialised precious metal/selenium bearing smelter residues.
- AusIndustry support awarded covering a number of projects conducted over the past 12 years.
- Ability to conduct business on a global scale with increasing awareness of HydroMet’s capabilities and facilities.
- The HydroMet brand is now well developed in Australia and around the world with a number of successful offshore projects conducted and continuing.
- Battery Recycling Plant – Unanderra NSW with plans to build a secondary smelter to produce market quality lead bullion and lead alloys from the scrap lead recovered from batteries processed at the Unanderra facility.
